Frankincense is such an evocative word for many religious people, but few have a chance to visit the real Land of Frankincense in Dhofar. Its associated with religious ceremonies worldwide and of course with the gifts brought by the 3 Kings, or Wise Men, to Jesus.
We flew down to Oman’s southern region which has the Frankincense species Boswellia sacra growing in the rugged mountains in Dhofar. As its such an iconic tree I always like to bring guests to places where it grows. Here guests from Zegrahm make a visit to Frankincense Trees in an almost barren valley, which has both mature and relatively young trees.
Though winter is relatively cool in Oman, its still in the mid-20s c; so a refreshing stop for Tea was more than welcome, especially with the presence of Camels.
If you are interested in learning more about Frankincense, Oman is the source of Boswellia Sacra and my book ‘The Land of Frankincense’ has over 180pages about this mystical product and the land it grows in. I have a full colour interior version available in the UK here. .
