Though the Belitung Wreck has its own museum in Singapore the Omani ship the “Jewel of Muscat” is at the core of the displays.
The Belitung Wreck (sank in the mid 9th century AD) was a treasure ship literally full of Chinese products. The ship itself was made using the traditional Arabian Sea method of sewing, rather than nailing the timbers together.
The Oman government donated a full scale version of the ship to commemorate the ancient trade between Oman and China .
Some of the artefacts are here in Muscat as part of an exhibition “Ancient Treasure Ships” from December 14th 2010 to illustrate the trade and the role Oman had in it.
