I enjoyed leading a small group from Steppes Travel on a tour in Oman over the Christmas period.
This has been a mid-price program since I started organising it for The Traveller (British Museum Tours) who Steppes purchased.
I feel the price points don’t lead to expectations of 5* accommodation, which is sparse away from Muscat (so would limit the places we could comfortably reach). It allows us to organise a more local flavour – a form of experiential travel. Over the course of several days, our lunches were varied, including an open-air picnic with stupendous scenery and, inside a simple local home, a traditional-style meal.
As always we incorporated unexpected events (for our guests) into the days, including this one below with splendid horses and their riders – as well as Camels and theirs.
Oman is full of Date Oasis and we enjoyed a walk through one.
In Oman, the date trees are an important crop and tightly packed together, offering good shade and coolness.
Our accommodation included one of my favourites, irrespective of cost. Its set on a small sea lagoon and with breakfast directly on the sandy beach and a few meters from the sea which makes a great start to a day.
