Victor the buggy in Muscat from Salalah

Tucked away under the shade of my breakfast source, Lulu in Darsait, I saw this well travelled car. Well travelled not just from Salalah, where I photoed it last week, to Muscat – but after 6 years on the road it has the most kilometres of any non production car.

Victor the buggy is a hand made gem, with a bedroom for two on the roof and plenty of adventures to tell. Chris and Elayne, UK born Australians, crossed into Oman with him on a small Dhow through the Arabian Sea from Somalia to Salalah; their companions along with the crew…over 400 cattle !!Quite how they blagged an exit permit from Somalia is a tale in itself.

The car is built to run on cooking oil! Which in the US both saved them and almost cost their lives. In the middle of the US, with no cash in their pockets, a restaurant donated 5 vats of used oil. Later as the car needed refilling on the road they stopped in a forest to refill and a Beverly Hill Billy type came out of nowhere and let them know he knew they were new in these here parts! How on earth did he know?!! The clue was they were filling the car with a Grizzly Bear’s favourite snack, cooking oil, and any Grizzly would kill to get it….

After Oman they are off to the Indian Sub-Continent , and back to Australia. Read more on their site http://www.ouradventurebug.com/
