Taking a trip over to Masirah Island can now be done on three different boat types. The small fishing boats are super fast, but uncomfortable especially if there is fishing equipment alongside you; the old flat bottomed ferries chug over and really feel like an adventure all be it in slow motion; and the new catamarans are a cocoon-like experience, with air-conditioned passenger areas. We booked the new ferry from their Muscat office and arrived a couple of hours early in Shennah to make certain we caught it.

Tickets having been issued in the port office opposite Masirah, we had an hour to while away, so watched the fishermen unloading their catch of Sardines and the Sooty Gulls enjoying a free meal.

Driving onto and parking inside the ferry turned out to be a bit of an obstacle course with the columns supporting the overhead passenger deck requiring a convoluted U-Turn to get parked. Then we had safety regulations given to us while seated for ‘safety’. Then it was possible to watch the horizon glow after the sun set as we crossed to Masirah Island and watched the older ferry chug along in the opposite direction.
