While we all applauded the spectacle, the sun sank into the desert hills to the west below as we stood in the Fakhr-al-Din al-Maani Castle .

To the east, immediately underneath the castle, was the city of Palmyra,

its multi civilization buildings glowing.

Greek, Nabataean, Roman & Mamluk structures in Palmyra reflect the importance of the site which straddled trade and invasion routes.

Syria for me was an extraordinary country and fortune favoured me to visit it in the early 2000s.
