The fruit of Baobab Trees (seen below at the base of the mountains in Dhofar, Oman) has just been given EU approval to be used in smoothies and cereal bars.
Oman has probably around 100 of the trees, mainly in the south but a few in the north. This low number has not allowed any commercial use of the tree in the same way as the date and coconut – but I will certainly look more carefully next time I visit them to see if I can try a few fruit in my drinks.
My rewrite of the Bradt Guide to Oman is available in eBook here and paperback through Amazon worldwide here. includes 2 sites for the tree in Dhofar, pages 308 & 319
My other books on Oman include The Land of Frankincense – about the history and sites associated with the Frankincense Tree in Dhofar, which is available as an eBook here, and paperback through Amazon worldwide.
